Lion’s Head sport climbing and camping weekend
LION'S HEAD SPORT CLIMBING AND CAMPING WEEKEND
Lion’s Head, Ontario
Saturday, June 2 & Sunday, June 3, 2012
This section of the Niagara Escarpment near the Bruce Peninsula village of Lion’s Head has become a top sport climbing destination for those in southern Ontario and beyond.
Nearly all the routes are in the 5.9-5.14 range. The way in which the upper limestone strata jut out over an underlying cliff of eroded shale means that on most routes the climbers must rappel down about half-way to hanging belays and then lead up to the top again. Here's an image from the web that gives you an idea of the terrain.

(Warning: you face a rugged hike of several kilometres back to Lion’s Head if you must lower off to lake level.)
There has been no limit set so far on the number of participants on this trip. However, given the unusual nature of the terrain, anyone who is interested must be able to comfortably climb 5.9 sport, must be able to set up top anchors and hanging belays, and must be able to rappel without assistance. For that reason, the trip is classified as B+ (or B/C on the trip matrix below).
Participants staying the entire weekend will camp at the Hope Bay Campground in Hope Bay, about midway between Wiarton and Lion’s Head.
