ice at eagles nest

Was there today on Roller Coaster. There was a river of water flowing down everywhere so with the cold temps we are supposed to be having for the next few days things should be good for the weekend.

I was there yesterday too

I was there yesterday too Michael. I dont know when you climbed rollercoaster, but when I was there at last light the ice conditions were very strange, fractures from tool placements would spiderweb out farther than acceptable in my judgement.
I was climbing the curtain via hollow victory and near the top my tool placement fractured the ice along most of the curtain making a loud hollow crackling sound. I backed off to finish the upper step of rollercoaster and even that was like a china shop as the entire top buldge fractured into a TV size chunk that thankfully held in place durring my passage.
I have never experienced a condition like that before, sure I have seen brittle ice with dinner plates that come off, but you can always find hard ice beneath the plate sort of like an onion skin. With my headlamp I could see the fracture penetrate horrizontially deep into the feature. I guess it was the warm spell and subsequent runoff that warmed the ice and homogenized the whole ice mass. I am going to stay off her for a few days to see how she recovers. The temps are cold here today as my thermometer read -23 C this morning @ 0600. So the ice sould heal and form more onion skin layers to be better this weekend like you said Michael.

HaHa I was out last weekend

HaHa I was out last weekend and that was happening on about half my swings while soloing the first couple of pitches before we set a belay. Once on the steeper stuff it calmed down thankfully. Some of the fractures were running several feet. I decided to replace my picks as I've hardly even sharpened them in the last 40 days this season. Not that sharper picks make a huge difference most of the time. It's just the ice is highly stressed, that causes that.
