Ice Conditions Roundup Jan 2-5, 2012 Kushog, Bancroft, Kluke, Papineau etc
Kushog – Saturday December 31st (from Jon G.)
Caramel Coating – in.
Blue Pillar – touching down, but too thin to climb at the bottom.
Lake Kushog itself was covered in ice, but they didn’t test its thickness and took the land approach behind the Firehouse restaurant (it was closed, so they didn’t have to pay the $15 parking fee).
Kluke Lookout – January 3rd
Not in. Bear Lake at the base of Kluke Lookout was frozen over solidly.
(Justin B and Jim E put up most of a dry-tooling route in there on January 2)
Fisher Lake – January 3rd
Coming in, but not quite there yet.
Papineau Lake – January 4th
Not in. Only a couple of thin icicles were visible from across the lake. The middle of the lake was open water.
Consolation Prize at Papineau North is in.
Diamond Lake – January 4th
We approached the climbs along the lake, but sticking close to the shoreline. Later we ventured further onto the lake. There were a good 3+ inches of ice everywhere we tested.
Distinct Society – touching down, but the icicles haven’t congealed and solidified yet
Guardian Angel – in.
The climb to the left of Where Egos Dare – more ice on it than I’ve ever seen before
Where Eagle’s Dare – there’s ice in the corner the whole way up, but it’s still very thin. with at least on all- rock step dwon low
Between Eagle’s and Wimps – very thin
Where Wimps Dare – looked to be in, but the top out would be difficult
Malachite Brochade – thin, but a climbable line can be pieced together
Ochre Silk – in, but steep and narrow; would be a committing lead
Blue Velvet – in
Aqua Plush – no
Thunderdome – no
Kermit’s Finger – no; missing ice in the middle section
Tammy Baker’s Face – just a glaze
Zero Gully – looks like it’s trying to come in this year
Bancroft – January 5th
The property boundary of the Chiropractor’s lot is festooned with No Climbing/No Trespassing signs and cordoned off with caution tape. However, the Rollercoaster (and the Curtain above) can still be accessed through the alternative right hand start (around the corner to the right from the regular start) which is not on the Chiropractor’s land.
Rollercoaster – in.
The Curtain - Men Without Hats, Hollow Victory, Jetstream – all in; fat ice, lots of water running.
North Face of the Eiger, Blue Angel- not even close.
Dirty Harry – good ice at the top, but a mixed climb for the bottom half.
Amazing Glace – in
Hidden Gully – first pitch is in.
Bow Lake – from the road it looked to have a good bit of ice; not sure about the lake crossing
I'll post some photos later when I get the chance.
